How
to get there - From Kirkwall take the A964, just past the Hobbister
Nature Reserve turn left. There is plenty of parking along this road and
easy access to the mark via a footpath at the car park.

Features – A very shallow sandy bay with low weed
covered rock either side. Because the beach is shallow it is best to fish
this bay not from the beach but from the rock either side. Anywhere along
from the footpath is ideal. Casting from the rocky areas will enable you
to reach the deeper channels along the low water line. The beach will
fish best two hours either side of low water. You are likely to encounter
Turbot, Plaice, Dabs, Flounder, Thornback Ray and Whiting in the bay,
with Codling in close by the weed covered rocks.
Baits – Turbot will take frozen sandeel or long
Mackerel strips fished on a 2 hook rig. Plaice and Dabs should fall to
most baits including lugworm, squid or mackerel fished on a two hook rig.
Thornback Rays will be caught using a single hook paternoster with a longer
3ft (92cm) hook length fished with Mackerel, Squid or a combination bait
of both. The Cod will fall to lugworm or mussel fished on a standard one
hook paternoster rig.
Mussels can be picked on some of the rocks around Waulkmill Bay, but
it’s best to come prepared with bait.
Tackle – A standard 5 to 6 oz beachcaster is ideal
for this terrain. If fishing for the Cod down the edges its worth tackling
up with a heavier/larger sized reel capable of holding 300-yards (275m)
of 25lb (11.34kg) line as it can be quite rough.
