Orkney Shore Fishing: Tingwall Pier

more marks

Tingwall PierHow to get there - From Kirkwall take the A965 to Finstown and then the A966 towards Rendall and carry on this road until you see the sign post for Tingwall pier, illustrated by a picture of a ferry. There is ample parking close to the pier. View Multi Map

Features – Tingwall pier offers the chance to cast over light weed covered rock on all sides with patches of clean sand. Due to the fact this is a working ferry pier and the water is generally shallow, its best fished at night. Although sport can be had spinning along the edges of the pier wall itself for decent sized Coalfish and Pollack. This mark produces Codling and Dogfish as well as Mackerel during the summer high water evenings. Plaice and Dabs are likely to be caught casting onto the cleaner sandy patches.

Baits – Codling will take worm and squid baits whilst the Dogfish will take most baits presented. Plaice and Dabs will respond better to worm baits on the sandy patches but could also be taken on small Mackerel strips.

The pier is good for catching Mackerel during the summer months for bait, but lugworm should be dug in advance.

Tackle – A 5 to 6oz beachcaster will be required for fishing baits from the pier. A simple one hook paternoster is the order of the day for Codling, whilst smaller two hook rigs will be required for the Dab and Plaice. A light spinning rod and Toby or Dexter Wedge spinners should be used for fishing along the pier wall for Coalfish and Pollack.
