Features – A shallow and mostly clean sandy beach
facing into Scapa Flow, be aware of the patches of stone, weed and other
rough ground at the western end. There is some boat activity from the
working pier close by on the eastern side and this may hamper the longer
casters during the day time. The beach fishes best at night, either side
of low water or through a flooding tide. Scapa Bay produces good Flounder,
Dabs, Plaice and Thornback Ray in the calmer seas. With an onshore wind
expect to catch Cod and Whiting.
Baits – Flounder will take mostly lugworm whilst
Dabs, Plaice and Whiting will fall to most baits including lugworm, small
squid and mackerel strips. Thornbacks will respond to squid, mackerel
or a cocktail bait of both with Cod taking mostly lugworm and squid baits.
Tackle - It’s best to use two standard 5 to 6oz
beachcasters if you have them. One fished short with a two or three hook
paternoster for the Flounder, Dabs, Plaice and Whiting and one fished
long for the Thornback Ray and Cod. For the Thornbacks a single hook paternoster
with a 3ft (92cm) hook snood is best, while Cod will take lugworm and
squid fished on a standard one hook paternoster.
