Features – The beach is made up of weed covered
rough ground at the top side with patches of sand towards the mid and
low tide line. The best of the sand is to the east side where a small
river flows onto the beach. Because of the relative shallowness of this
beach, its best fished at night. Sandy areas will carry Plaice, Dabs and
Flounder, with the best Flounder found near the river. The rocky point
on the east also offers Conger, Huss and Codling.
Baits – Plaice and Dabs will take either Mackerel
or lugworm baits with Flounder preferring lugworm baits. Codling will
take lugworm and squid with Conger and Huss preferring Mackerel baits
Although there are better areas around the Island, lugworm can be dug
on the Sands of Evie. There is however excellent razorfish collection
opportunities along the low water line during the bigger spring tides.
Tackle – A 5 to 6oz beachcaster is ideal on this
beach (essential for the rocky point) although a light 2 to 4oz rod could
be deployed for the flatfish. For the sandier areas a standard beach casting
reel will be sufficient although a larger capacity reel is recommended
for the rocky point. A pulley rig will be required on the rocky point
to fish for Conger and Huss. For the conger a short foot long hook traces
of 100lb (45.36kg) mono is the best choice coupled with O’Shaughnessy
pattern hooks up to 8/0. Cod are best suited to a simple one hook paternoster
rig with a weak link to the lead.
