Orkney Shore Fishing: Kirkwall Harbour Bay

more marks

Kirkwall Harbour BayHow to get there - From Kirkwall take the A965 and then turn right onto the road for the Hatston Industrial Estate and park in the car park opposite the Ortak Jewellery Visitor Centre facing into Kirkwall harbour. View Multi Map

Features – This area is a mixture of mud and weed covered rock with patches of sand. This is an excellent flounder fishing mark which fishes best from low water through the flooding tide and for the first hour of the ebb. In the right weather conditions and at night the mark will also produce Eels, Codling, Coalfish and Dabs. There is also a chance of catching a rare Sculpin or Bull-rout fish.

Baits – Although lugworm is the bait of choice for the Flounder, Mackerel also seems to work just as well on this mark. Eels, Coalfish and Dabs will all fall to Mackerel baits with Cod preferring lugworm and squid baits.

Tackle – A 5 to 6oz beachcaster will be sufficient for this mark, with a simple one or two hook rig taking most fish.
