Features – Probably the best of all Orkney shore
marks for size and variety of fish. All three Churchill Barriers produce
good fishing. Barrier No. 1 is the less active, but still produces Codling
and Ling. Barriers No. 2 and 3 give the most consistent fishing with excellent
Ling catches, big Cod, Conger and good Flounder. Wrasse, Coalfish, Mackerel,
Thornback Ray, Dabs and Whiting are all in evidence. This is an all year
round venue and fishes best on bigger spring tides, especially during
night-time. Barrier No. 2 also has a pier which you can fish off which
produces some excellent Flounder fishing.
Baits – Ling and Conger will generally respond
to the bigger Mackerel baits or other small fish baits. The Cod will take
large lugworm baits and whole squid with Thornback Ray preferring mackerel/squid
combination baits. The Dabs and Whiting will be caught on smaller lugworm
and Mackerel strip baits as well as the Wrasse taking small lugworm baits
close in to the barriers.
Mackerel are caught throughout the summer from the Barriers and it is
an excellent source for fresh bait. You will see shoals of mackerel moving
up and down the barriers very close in scattering on the surface.
Tackle – A 5 to 6oz beachcaster is essential,
it is also recommended for the bigger fish using a larger capacity reel
to cope with the rougher ground conditions. Small two hook rigs should
be used for general fishing with larger one hook paternosters used for
the Cod, Ling and Conger. A one hook clipped down rig is also a good idea
for the bigger Flounder at range off the pier at Barrier No. 2.
